ABOUT ARTIST STATEMENT

Rick Dove, a multidisciplinary artist and designer hailing from South Central Los Angeles, has carved a niche in the creative industry through his innovative approach to art and fashion. With over a decade of experience in branding, strategy, and apparel design, Rick's journey began with a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication from Otis College of Art and Design. His early career included an internship with Pigalle in Paris, where he honed his skills in sourcing fabrics and product design under the mentorship of Stephane Ashpool. This international experience enriched his perspective, blending European aesthetics with his unique cultural background.

In 2016, Rick founded Pakkard Studio in Downtown Los Angeles, an avant-garde concept shop that seamlessly integrated art, literature, and fashion. The studio became a cultural hub, showcasing brands like Pleasures, Soulland, and Carrots by Anwar Carrots, while also serving as an experimental space for emerging artists. Building on this success, he launched "Much-More," an apparel brand that delves into the complexities of artistic expression within Black culture. Notably, in 2021, Rick designed the single artwork for H.E.R.'s "Fight For You," contributing to a project that garnered both Grammy and Oscar accolades. His collaborations extend to esteemed institutions such as the Hammer Museum and major music labels like Sony Records and Warner Music, underscoring his versatility and commitment to creating meaningful, culturally resonant work.
“My art is a fusion of cultural narratives, personal memories, and contemporary aesthetics, rooted in my upbringing in South Central Los Angeles and enriched by global experiences. I explore identity, resilience, and the visual language of Black culture through multidisciplinary practices spanning apparel, design, and fine art. Drawing from everyday textures, historical weight, and the dialogue between tradition and innovation, my creative process flows organically across digital and physical mediums. Art, for me, is about connecting past and present, individual and community, through storytelling, design, and cultural commentary. My work embodies this journey, inviting viewers to engage, reflect, and find themselves within each piece.”
